Before comparing rooms, decide where your luggage should be at the end of the first day. A late arrival followed by another long transfer is a different holiday from waking up near the countryside.
If the trip you pictured is countryside between karst peaks, read the accommodation address rather than its broad “Guilin” search label. Guilin city, Yangshuo town and a rural guesthouse outside town are different places to start a morning.

When Guilin city makes the simpler first night
An arrival late in the day, an early departure or a short stop focused on the city can favour staying in Guilin. Check the actual journey from your arrival point to the hotel and from the hotel to the next departure.
Do not treat that as a blanket recommendation to stay near any station. The region has several stations with different locations. The Li River scenic area's transport information lists them separately. Copy the exact name on your train ticket into the route search.
One night with a straightforward arrival may be more useful than reaching a scenic room very late and leaving it again before breakfast.
When Yangshuo fits the trip you pictured
If countryside walks, river scenery and time outside town are the main reason for coming, staying in the Yangshuo area can reduce repeated returns to Guilin. That still leaves a second decision: a room in town or a quieter location outside it.
For a rural stay, ask how you will reach dinner, where a car can stop and how an early pickup works. “Close to Yangshuo” is not the same as being able to walk to the places you need. Read the address and the recent access information, not only the view from the room.
For a town stay, check the specific street and the kind of evening you want. A convenient room beside a busy entertainment area and a quiet night are not necessarily the same purchase.
Give the river outing its own transport plan
Before choosing a river product, check the operator, boarding point, where it finishes, the date and any conditions that affect your party. The official Li River visitor site is a starting point for current information.
A cruise, a shorter river outing and an activity on another river are not interchangeable just because their photographs show similar peaks. Do not assume a listing includes hotel pickup or a return journey unless the product says so.
Water conditions and operations can affect services. Keep an alternative day shape that does not depend on boarding a particular boat, and check the operator's current requirements before paying.
Decide where your luggage ends the day
If you are moving accommodation during a river day, settle the bags first. Ask whether storage or a separate transfer is available, what is included and where you collect the bags afterwards. Do not arrive at a boarding point and assume luggage forwarding is part of the ticket.
For a short stay, changing hotels repeatedly can consume more time than it saves. Compare one base with a planned excursion against splitting the stay; count packing, checkout and the final approach to the next hotel in both options.
Choose the version that fits your arrival
For an arrival-focused visit, spend the first night in Guilin, make one chosen outing and keep the departure easy. For a countryside-focused visit, reach the Yangshuo-area base, stay long enough to use it and organise the departure separately.
Neither outline needs every distant sight. The rice terraces deserve their own travel time. A city cave and several river activities will not slip into the gaps simply because they are all listed under Guilin.
If you need help communicating a pickup or hotel-access question, use the Guilin city page. Include the actual station, pier or accommodation address. Those details matter more than a broad request for someone to help “in Guilin.”
