You can plan a Shanghai visit without speaking Mandarin. Preparing Chinese addresses and a few focused questions will make the moments between the sights easier: confirming a restaurant branch, explaining where a car should meet you, checking an order, and agreeing on a change of plan.

This guide is about communication, rather than choosing the best attractions or promising English service at every venue. Use it alongside a map and your bookings. If you want a food-and-photo route, our one-day Shanghai article covers that separate task.

English, Mandarin and Shanghainese: what visitors need

Shanghai has its own local speech as well as the Mandarin you will see in general travel resources. The municipal portal explains that Shanghai dialect has a pronunciation distinct from Mandarin. You do not need to study the dialect to prepare your visit; written Chinese names are the most practical information to save for your destinations. Official introduction to Shanghai dialect.

The presence of English information online does not establish that your driver, restaurant server, or shop assistant will conduct a conversation in English. Keep messages short, show one question at a time, and give the other person room to reply in writing.

Save the Chinese name and address of your accommodation, the restaurant branch you want, and your next meeting point. Screenshots are useful if reception is weak or an app does not load.

Find the restaurant branch before thinking about the menu

Start with the exact venue, not just a dish name or an English search result. Check the street address, district, and branch suffix. A restaurant name may lead to several locations; a photograph of a famous storefront is not enough to identify today's lunch destination.

For the Wukang Road–Anfu Road area, choose a meal near the part of the walk you actually plan to visit. For the Bund, check whether the restaurant is on your route or requires a separate journey. These two areas should not be treated as a single compact neighbourhood simply because both appear in a one-day itinerary.

Shanghai's official visitor portal reports that Amap offers multilingual services and bilingual phrase cards. Use the current app features to locate your saved destination, then match the branch and address with the restaurant's own information. Official digital map guidance.

For a reservation enquiry, try 请问今天晚上六点有两个人的位子吗? — Do you have a table for two at six this evening? Replace the time and party size, and ask the venue to confirm the branch in its reply.

Ordering in Shanghai: confirm filling, quantity and price

At a dumpling restaurant, identify the filling before deciding how many baskets to order. 鲜肉小笼 refers to pork soup dumplings; 蟹粉小笼 refers to crab-meat and roe soup dumplings. The restaurant's menu determines which versions are offered. Confirm the name and ingredients with staff rather than relying on a photograph.

Ask 一笼有几个? — How many are in a basket? Or 这份够几个人吃? — How many people is this portion enough for? At a shared meal, order gradually if you are uncertain about the size of the dishes.

These short prompts also help:

  • 请给我看一下菜单。 — Please show me the menu.
  • 请问这道菜里面有什么? — What ingredients are in this dish?
  • 请帮我确认一下点的菜和价格。 — Please help me confirm the dishes ordered and the prices.
  • 可以打包吗? — Can I take the leftovers away?

For a dietary requirement, name the ingredient and ask about sauces, broth, and preparation as well as the main dish. A translated phrase starts a conversation; it does not confirm that a restaurant can meet a complex requirement. For serious allergies, use a carefully prepared allergy card and obtain a direct answer before ordering.

Paying: explain the problem before changing the method

If a payment fails, show the failure message without exposing your account credentials. Ask staff whether you should scan the merchant's code or display your payment code, then check the amount before retrying. Keep a second payment method available.

Shanghai's municipal portal provides current instructions for visitor payment methods, including mobile payments and currency exchange. Check the guidance for your own card and app setup; available methods vary by merchant and account. Official Shanghai payment guidance.

For a simple question, 请问怎么付款? means “How do I pay?” If you need cash as a backup, 可以付现金吗? asks “Can I pay cash?” Our China payments guide covers preparation, so you do not have to solve registration for the first time at a busy counter.

Taxis and meetings: send the address, entrance and time

Shanghai's municipal transport portal introduces taxis as a door-to-door option. Before taking a ride, save the destination's Chinese address and decide which entrance you need. Official Shanghai taxi information.

For Pudong and Hongqiao arrivals, use the current airport transport information for your actual terminal and arrival time. Do not substitute one airport's instructions for the other. For a business appointment, ask the host for the building name, floor, entrance, and any reception instructions.

If you are meeting a local after lunch, share your exact branch and a photograph of where you will wait. 我们在正门外见面。 means “Let's meet outside the main entrance.” Add the time and map pin. If you are delayed, 我会晚到十分钟。 means “I will be ten minutes late.”

For general setup and route tools, use the maps and transport section. Avoid making an important appointment depend on a travel-time estimate with no allowance for the final walk or reception.

When to arrange English-speaking local help in Shanghai

You may only need support for one part of the day: confirming a restaurant reservation, explaining several meal preferences, contacting a venue, or managing the practical details around a meeting. Describe that part before choosing a person.

For example, a Wukang–Anfu afternoon could need two hours of neighbourhood context and restaurant communication. A business visit in Pudong could need specialist interpreting, which requires different experience. Ask about the individual's language pair and background rather than assuming that every bilingual local offers every service.

Review the Shanghai city page and browse independent Shanghai locals. A clear first message might be:

We are two English-speaking visitors in Shanghai on [date]. We would like help confirming a restaurant branch near Wukang Road and communicating our order at lunch. We need to finish by [time]. Can you help with those tasks for [duration], and what is your fee?

Confirm the scope, meeting place, duration, and fee directly. Ask separately about any third-party expenses or specialist services. You should be able to explain what the arrangement includes in one sentence before agreeing to it.

Quick answers about English in Shanghai

Do I need to learn Shanghainese for a short visit?

No. Saving written Chinese destination names and learning a few practical Mandarin prompts is a more useful preparation for routine visitor tasks.

Can I use a translation app for restaurant orders?

Yes, as a communication aid. Confirm the branch, filling, portion, and final order with staff. Use a more detailed conversation for requirements that cannot be resolved from the menu alone.

Is a local the same as a business interpreter?

No. If the task involves interpreting a meeting or specialist terminology, ask for relevant experience and agree on the assignment in advance.
