Messaging tips for travellers
Hotels, drivers and locals often coordinate by WeChat. Share a live location or send an exact map pin and entrance photo when you meet someone. If plans change, message as early as possible.
WeChat has a built-in translation option for messages; use it for simple exchanges, and write important details such as addresses, times and prices as short, clear sentences.
Set up WeChat Pay
- Go to Me → Services → Wallet (or Pay and Services).
- Add an eligible international card under Cards. Supported networks and availability depend on your card issuer and the app's current rules.
- Complete real-name verification with your passport if asked.
- If linking fails, do not rely on personal transfers, red packets or wallet balance. Contact Weixin Pay or your card issuer and keep Alipay, a card and RMB cash as backups.

Showing your payment code
Open Me → Services → Money, choose the payment code and show it to the cashier. Menu names may vary by version. Only show the code at checkout and never send it to anyone remotely.
Stay safe
- Never share payment passwords or verification codes, even with someone claiming to be support staff.
- Be cautious with QR codes from strangers.
- Check the merchant name and the amount in CNY before confirming a payment.
