Shop code vs transport code
When you pay in a shop you show a payment code. Metros and buses use a separate transport QR code (often called a ride code) that is specific to a city or operator. Linking a foreign card to WeChat Pay does not by itself confirm that every city's transport service will accept that setup.
How to set up a transport code
- Open WeChat (or Alipay) and search for the transport or metro service of the city you are visiting.
- Follow its activation steps, including any payment authorisation.
- Check that the code shows the correct city before you reach the gate.
- Scan at the gate on entry and again on exit, following the operator's instructions.
Menu names change between app versions, so look for the city's official metro service rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Chengdu: China Daily reported in 2025 that overseas-issued UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards can be tapped at Chengdu metro gates and on buses, provided small-amount password-free payment is enabled. Source: China Daily: Chengdu metro and overseas cards (chinadaily.com.cn).
Other cities have their own systems. Check the operator's current information before you travel.
Backups that always work
- A single-journey ticket from a station machine or service centre.
- A city transport card where available.
- A contactless bank card in cities that accept it at the gate.
- RMB cash for tickets and taxis.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Ride-hailing services inside Alipay and WeChat, and DiDi, are other options. Save your destination in Chinese and confirm the pickup point in the app. See our maps and transport guide.
Quick answers
Can I use WeChat Pay on the Beijing or Shanghai metro?
Many visitors can, using the city's transport code inside WeChat or Alipay. Activate it before reaching the gate.
Why was my code rejected at the gate?
You may be showing a shop-payment code, or the code may be for a different city. Switch to the correct transport code or buy a ticket.
Do I need a separate app?
Not always. Some cities also offer their own metro app, such as Metro Daduhui in Shanghai.
