Chengdu is an easy first stop if you get a few practical things sorted. The metro is fully bilingual. Ordering food, asking what is in a dish or finding a side entrance usually goes faster with a short message written in Chinese.
Most visitors manage on their own. A local is worth it for a specific job, like a long hotpot dinner with dietary needs or a family day out to the pandas.
Is Chengdu English-friendly for independent visitors?
China Daily reported in August 2025 that Chengdu Metro signs are in Chinese and English across the network, trains and stations have bilingual announcements, and all 423 stations have real-time translation devices supporting more than ten languages. Bilingual volunteers are available at key stations. Source: China Daily: Chengdu eases city navigation (chinadaily.com.cn).
The same report says overseas-issued UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards can be tapped at metro gates and on buses, provided small-amount password-free payment is enabled in advance. Check the current rules with your card issuer before relying on it.
Outside transport, expect to rely on written Chinese. A hotpot restaurant, a teahouse in a park or a taxi driver may not answer in English, so keep short messages ready.
Where English is easy in Chengdu, and where it isn't
| Situation | What to prepare | When help is worth it |
|---|---|---|
| Taking the metro | Save the station name in Chinese and the exit nearest your destination. | You need to change plans at a busy station and want someone to confirm the route. |
| Ordering hotpot or Sichuan dishes | Decide on spice level and ingredients before you sit down. | Several dietary needs have to be explained to staff. |
| Visiting the Panda Base | Save the exact venue name and entrance; arrive early. | You want help planning transport and timing for a family group. |
Before you go out in Chengdu
Before you head out, screenshot your hotel's Chinese address and the exact name of any restaurant you plan to visit. Hotpot chains often have several branches with the same English name. If you are going to the pandas, save the venue's Chinese name too: a taxi driver will recognise 成都大熊猫繁育研究基地 faster than “Panda Base”.

Spice levels and Sichuan menus
Chengdu food is known for chilli and Sichuan pepper. A translated menu photo rarely tells you how spicy a dish is, so ask directly.
- 不要辣: No chilli, please.
- 微辣: Mildly spicy (still contains chilli).
- 有没有不辣的菜?: Do you have dishes that aren't spicy?
- 这个有花椒吗?: Does this contain Sichuan pepper?
For hotpot, ask whether a split pot (鸳鸯锅) is available and which side is mild. For serious allergies, carry a clearly prepared allergy card and confirm with staff; a translation app is only a starting point.
Panda Base, teahouses and getting the venue right
Several panda-related venues exist around Chengdu, so save the exact Chinese name and entrance of the one you have booked. Our Panda Base half-day guide covers the timing.
In park teahouses, pointing at a tea list and confirming the price before ordering is usually enough. Ask 多少钱一杯? (How much per cup?)
When a Chengdu local is worth it
The most common reason people ask for help here is food. If someone in your group can't eat chilli, has an allergy or doesn't eat pork, a local can explain that to the kitchen properly and steer you to dishes that work. The other is an early panda morning with children, where getting the transport and entrance right saves a lot of waiting.

Quick answers
Can I use the Chengdu metro without Chinese?
Yes, generally. Signs and announcements are bilingual according to the city's 2025 upgrade. Save the station names in Chinese anyway, in case you need to ask staff.
Is Sichuan dialect a problem?
Many locals speak Sichuanese among themselves but understand Standard Mandarin. Written Chinese messages work regardless of dialect.
Do I need a guide for the whole trip?
Usually not. Consider help for specific tasks: a complicated meal, a family transport plan or a time-sensitive appointment.
