Do People Speak English in Shenzhen?

Shenzhen is a young city where Mandarin is the common language. English varies widely by place; prepare written Chinese for drivers, shops and restaurants, and use official multilingual service points when you need them.

  • Save Chinese addresses and mall entrances
  • Keep a translation backup offline
  • Confirm border-crossing plans

Most people in Shenzhen moved there from other parts of China, so Mandarin is the everyday language. English depends a lot on where you are: fine in international hotels and some offices, patchy in electronics markets and taxis.

The trickiest part for many visitors is finding the right building. Shenzhen's malls and towers are big, and several can share almost the same name.

Is Shenzhen English-friendly for independent visitors?

Shenzhen Government Online reported that an International Service Center opened at Shenzhen North Railway Station on 13 August 2026. It offers multilingual consultations with real-time translation devices, transit inquiries and currency exchange, and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Source: Shenzhen Government Online: international service hub (sz.gov.cn).

Most people in Shenzhen speak Mandarin, because many residents moved from other provinces. Cantonese is also heard, but written Chinese characters are the reliable common ground.

Large malls and office towers often have several entrances and towers with similar names. Save the building, tower and entrance, not just the mall name.

Before you go out in Shenzhen

Save the building name, tower and entrance for every meeting, not just the mall or district. If you are going to Huaqiangbei, note the building and floor of any stall you want to find again. Sellers there are used to typing numbers on a calculator, so you can usually agree a price without much talking.

Huaqiangbei and electronics markets

Read our Huaqiangbei first-visit guide before you go. Stalls are grouped by building and floor, and many sellers communicate with calculators or written numbers.

  • 多少钱?: How much?
  • 有发票吗?: Can you give an invoice?
  • 可以试一下吗?: Can I test it?
  • 请写下来。: Please write it down.

Moving between Shenzhen and Hong Kong

Several land and rail crossings connect the two cities, with different hours and procedures. Check the current information for your chosen crossing before you go, and keep your hotel address in both cities saved offline.

When a Shenzhen local is worth it

A local helps most with technical or bulk purchases, where a misunderstanding about specs or quantities is expensive, and with business meetings in Chinese. If you are combining Shenzhen and Hong Kong in one trip, someone who knows the border crossings can also help you plan the timing.
